Urad dal (Skinned Black Gram)


1 cup Urad dal

1 medium Tomato (chopped)

1 medium Onion (chopped)

3 to 4 cloves Garlic (chopped or ground)

3 tbsp Oil

1 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds

2 tbsp Chili powder

1 tsp Turmeric powder

Handful Curry leaves

Handful Freshly chopped coriander

a pinch of Asafoetida

3 cups Water

Salt to taste


  • Pressure cook urad dal with turmeric and salt

  • Heat oil in a deep wok (kadai), add asafoetida, cumin and let it splutter

  • Add curry leaves, garlic, onions and saute. Cook till onions turn translucent

  • Add tomatoes and cook till soft

  • Add chili powder, boiled dal and mix well. Add more water if you think it is too thick. Adjust salt if need be.

  • Add coriander and serve hot with rice or chapati
